History of nukeproof

Nukeproof was born in 1990 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, founded by rider John Muenzenmeyer with a mission to create innovative, reliable solutions for the growing mountain biking scene. Early products like carbon/aluminium hubs and titanium frames set a new standard for quality and performance, earning Nukeproof a devoted following among riders and racers alike.

After the American MTB boom faded, Nukeproof faced challenges. In 2004, Michael Cowan, a Northern Irish downhill racer and fan of the brand, acquired it with a vision to reinvigorate its legacy. Under his leadership, Nukeproof relocated to Belfast and shifted focus to gravity-led products like titanium springs, wide handlebars, and, most notably, their first bike—the “Mega.” Designed for the legendary Megavalanche race, the Mega blended trail bike agility with downhill performance, paving the way for the emerging enduro category.

With input from top riders like Nigel Page and Sam Hill, Nukeproof expanded into racing, developing award-winning bikes and components tested at the sport’s highest levels, including the UCI Downhill World Cup and Enduro World Series. Today, Nukeproof designs its products in Belfast, supporting riders worldwide and continuing to push the boundaries of innovation in mountain biking.
